Critical values are defined as a "laboratory result which represents a pathophysiologic state which may be life-threatening unless some action is taken in a very short time and in which the state may not be readily detectable or highly suspected by the clinical physician." However, these values are usually correlated with the clinical condition of the patient. If the result meets the validation criteria established by the director of laboratories, the critical result is telephoned immediately to the inpatient nursing unit or physician's office or physician on call.
